Rainfall in May was generally average to above average across the country when compared with the long-term (2001-2016) monthly average. The areas that received above average rainfall include the entire governorate of North Lebanon as well as parts of Akkar, Mount Lebanon, Baalbek-El Hermel and Bekaa governorates. Monthly precipitation levels were higher compared to the same month last year across the country.
The analysis of the Agricultural Stress Index (ASI) for May 2017 shows that harvesting of winter crops (wheat and barley mainly), which were planted from November through January, was largely underway. By the end of May, the winter crop harvests were almost completed in South and El Nabatieh governorates, as well as in eastern parts of North Lebanon and Akkar governorates. Harvesting has also started in the south of Bekaa and in central parts of Baalbek-El Hermel. Where cereals are predominantly sown, the Bekaa governorate experienced below average precipitation throughout the crop-growing season (January-March), which could affect crop yields. Harvesting of winter crops is expected to finish in June.
